    School Governors

On behalf of the Governing Body of Langdon Park School I am pleased to tell you about the work we do.

If you have any queries about the following information or if you are interested in finding out more about the possibility of becoming a governor in the future please contact me Jane Cruse, Chair of Governors, by writing to me c/o Langdon Park School.

The duties and responsibilities of school governors are laid down by the Department for Education and may be summarised as follows:

    • Responsibility for the strategic management of the school, working with the Head teacher to set out the      school’s vision for future development.
    • Holding the school to account for its performance and progress.
    • Setting the annual school budget and monitoring how it is spent.
    • Reviewing and updating school policies.
    • Appointing the school’s Head teacher and being responsible for the Head’s annual appraisal.

The composition of the Governing Body.

At Langdon Park School there are 13 Governors in total all of whom are committed to helping the school and giving freely of their time. They are often referred to as “critical friends” providing both challenge and support, holding the school to account for its performance and it’s progress in all areas

There is 1 governor who is a teacher.   The Head teacher is also a governor.

The remaining governors come from both the public and private sectors bringing a range of experience and skills from business, finance, ICT, law and from education.

There are 2 full Governing Body meetings each term when committees report back on their work and the Head teacher presents reports. These meetings are minuted by our clerk who is a member of the Tower Hamlets Governor services staff.  Governors attendance at these meetings is expected and recorded. Regulations state that any absence has to be formally considered at the meeting.

Each Governor is asked to join a committee from the list below

    ·         Curriculum Committee known as PAT, standing for Performance, achievement and teaching.

    ·         Behaviour and Safeguarding Committee including health and safety.

    ·         Finance and Pay Policy Committee

    ·         Scrutiny and Strategy Committee which has a sub-committee to consider personnel matters

These committees meet at least once a term and link in to full Governing Body meetings to which they report.

Again in keeping with regulations governors attendance in committee meetings is recorded.   Governors hold the school to account in a variety of ways such as receiving reports and presentations from staff, questioning the Head teacher and his senior staff about the school’s performance and progress towards meeting its targets

Some governors become lead governors for particular aspects of school life by linking with senior staff in areas such as parental engagement, safeguarding and special education needs.

From time to time governors may be asked to sit on Panels for staff interviews and other aspects of school life.

Governors keep up to date through papers sent by the clerk, discussions with the Head teacher and senior staff and through attending training.

Tower Hamlets runs an induction course for new governors which they are  strongly recommended to attend.

The Borough provides a range of other optional courses for governors which are published each term, all of these courses are free to governors including the annual Tower Hamlets Governors Conference in November.

Langdon Park governors hold a Saturday morning “Away Day” in the Autumn term focussing on the school’s priorities set out in their Raising Achievement Plan. An external facilitator is invited to lead this “Away Day” which is also attended by senior staff from the school.

From time to time other training sessions take place to increase our understanding of the school’s priorities. These have been very well attended and received.

    School Visits.

Langdon Park governors hold an annual Visits Day arranged by the Head teacher when we tour the site with senior staff, visit lessons and meet some staff and pupils. This is both informative and enjoyable as are the various events held throughout the year to which governors are warmly invited and welcomed including performances, exhibitions and an Awards Evening.

I hope the above has given you a flavour of our work. You can be assured of our absolute commitment to Langdon Park school and all it is doing to raise standards and enhance the opportunities for all its pupils and for the local community it serves.
