    Anti Bullying Policy

    It is an unfortunate truth that bullying exists in all schools. In Langdon Park School we recognise that the problem of bullying exists and work hard to ensure that where it is detected it is dealt with it swiftly and effectively.  Supporting students, parents, teachers and non teaching staff in dealing with incidents of bullying is central to the Langdon Park School Code:

    • Everyone has the right to be treated with dignity and respect regardless of their age, ability, gender, power, race, religion or sexuality.
    • Everyone has the right to be in and work in a safe and pleasant school environment
    • Everyone has the right to expect that their personal property will be respected

    What is bullying?

    Bullying can include:

    • being made fun of
    • being left out of activities
    • damage to property
    • name calling
    • physical violence
    • pushing, punching and kicking
    • threats and extortion
    • spreading rumours/gossiping
    • upsetting phone calls, text or email messages

    Children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities may be targeted and may also have difficulties in reporting that they are being bullied. Being ignored or not included is another form of bullying.

    Homophobic bullying targets a victim because of his or her sexual orientation. Children can also be victims of bullying as a result of the sexual orientation of their parents or carers.

    Racist bullying takes place because of the individual’s appearance, background, ethnicity, language, race, religion or skin colour.

    Being different in some way can make children a target for bullying. Children will do so for many reasons, particularly to do with physical appearance. For example, a disfigurement, being too fat, too thin, too short, too tall, too attractive, wearing glasses, wearing teeth braces, shape of ears/nose, hair etc. It is not uncommon for children who are particularly able or gifted to be bullied because of their achievements.

    School Procedures

    Langdon Park School does not ignore suspected bullying. We listen carefully to accounts of what has happened from all those involved. We realise that several people saying the same thing does not necessarily mean they are telling the truth. Langdon Park seeks to solve problems, issue sanctions where appropriate, work on changing bullying behaviour and to follow up incidents that have been reported and check that the bullying has not resumed.

    Langdon Park staff are aware that incidents of bullying need to be dealt with sensitively, and that those reporting incidents are made to feel safe and secure. Students are encouraged to report incidents to a member of staff of their choice. When reporting an incident students are often accompanied by a parent or friend. Students are sometimes scared to report incidents because of future repercussions. We make it clear that students reporting incidents can remain anonymous, and our staff receive training on how to do this. Any action that the school decides to take is discussed with the person reporting the incident.

    As part of our ongoing work in creating a “safe and pleasant school environment” the school trains its staff on how to deal effectively with bullying. Langdon Park School has available a team of support staff that will, if asked, continue to work with students after the incident has been reported. These staff includes our team of:

    • Student Support Officers
    • School Based Police Officer who has been trained in restorative justice
    • Year 10 Student Mentors who have been trained in conflict resolution
    • Attendance and Welfare Advisor
    • Form Tutors
    • Heads of Year

    Anti-bullying education is addressed in a number of the areas of the school curriculum including Citizenship, Humanities, English and Drama. This positive work on an anti bullying culture continues in tutor period and assemblies; the tutors and Learning Coordinators being central to this. Students are regularly encouraged to voice their opinions and concerns through discussions and questionnaires. It’s this student voice that informs the school on the types of bullying that takes place and the areas in which it occurs. All staff, governors and students are aware that any form of bullying should be logged, investigated, recorded reported, acted upon and followed up.

    What does this mean?

    Logged – A member of staff will record down the main facts of the incident, this will include an incident slip on the school's behaviour monitoring system.

    Investigated – A teacher (it may be the Tutor or Learning Coordinator) will investigate, to establish the facts.

    Recorded – If the incident is found to be racist, details are written on an official racist incident reporting form. A copy of this form has to be returned to the Local Authority and details of any rascist incidents are reported to the governing body at their next meeting.

    Reported – A letter will go home to the parents/carers of the perpetrator informing them of the incident and of any sanctions used as a result. The perpetrator will if need be take part in a programme to change their behaviour and this would also be included in the letter home. If the incident is serious, or has occurred before, the letter will invite them to come into school to discuss the matter along with their son/daughter. During this meeting any action that the school decides to take will be explained to the parents (see School Action).

    Possible School Actions

    • verbal warning
    • year detention, lunch duty, break or lunchtime detention, community service
    • letter home informing parents/carers of the incident and asking them to attend a meeting
    • parental interview with student present
    • school detention, report card
    • parents and students are asked to sign an anti-bullying/ anti-racist contract
    • move the perpetrators tutor group or teaching group
    • internal exclusion leading to PRU
    • permanent exclusion
