Parents/Carers

COVID-19 UPDATE

The school is currently closed. We are therefore not running the Year 12 Parents Evening scheduled for this term.

Please see the main school pages for updates including Free School Meals vouchers. You can find lots of general information via the tabs opposite, and can see what your child has been asked to do each week in the ‘school closure’ sections in our main menu.

We are using Google Classroom to support our Year 12 and 13 students, and our Year 11 offer-holders. You can find information in the GOOGLE CLASSROOM section in the contents bar above.

We are committed to supporting all students and their families during this difficult time. Do please contact the school if you have any questions.

Working in partnership

Students succeed when parents and school work together in partnership with the student and well aware of the support they need. We work closely with parents to ensure that they feel well-informed about how to support their child both in terms of their academic studies and university and career aspirations.

What we expect of your child

Lesson 1 begins at 8.50 and your child is required to be on the school site by 8.45. Some students are given the privilege of a late start if they do not have a lesson period 1. Attendance and punctuality are closely monitored, and if your child’s attendance becomes a concern, we will contact you and ask for your support in ensuring we see the required improvement. All students are required to follow the sixth form code of conduct and dress code – see below.

Students have up to three 100 minute lessons each day. Sixth form courses require students to undertake a great deal of independent study, and there is an expectation that students complete reading and homework tasks when they do not have a timetabled lesson. It is generally acknowledged that sixth form students need to complete 15 – 20 hours of independent study a week in order to be successful. We timetable supervised sessions in the study centre to ensure students have a quiet place in which to do their work.

Events outside school

Young people need more than just academic qualifications to be successful in life. We have established highly successful partnerships with various organisations which run activities to help students prepare for university and for their chosen career. We also take students to events and key venues in London to broaden their experience. Some of these events take place during school hours, others will take place after school and may require students to travel to meetings independently. This is an important part of their development and we ask parents to be supportive of such activities.

Communication with parents

We use MILK app to set homework for students, and parents will be given login details so that you can keep track of what work your child has been set. The app also lets you view their attendance record. See below for more information. We have a formal Parents Evening for each year group, giving you the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with each of their subject teachers. We also run Parent Information Sessions covering key topics such as study and revision techniques for home, university applications, student finance, apprenticeships and careers. If you wish to speak to us at any time, please do contact us and we will do our best to help.

Part time work

We recognise that some students will want to take on part-time work during sixth form. It is essential that your child does not take on any shifts during school hours, and please be aware that evidence shows that anything more than 10 hours work in a week has a negative impact on their achievement.
